Simone Arianne Biles, /sI'moUn/baI@lzwas born on March 14 1997. She tied Shannon Miller for the number of Olympic medals won in American gymnastics, and is currently the ninth most. She is considered by many sources to be the most successful gymnast of all time. Joe Biden awarded Biles the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022. Biles won gold medals at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics. Biles also earned bronze medals in balance beam and floor as well as an all-around vault. Biles was part of the United States team known as the "Final Five". However, Biles pulled out of many of the events because of issues with "the twisties" which refers to temporary loss of balance awareness in the air. She eventually won the silver medal of the US team and bronze on balance beam. The partial withdrawal, the focus on mental health, safety and determination were all praised. She's also an all-around champion five times over, World all-around champion (2013-2015, 2018-2019) and five-time World floor exercise champion (2013-2015 2018, 2018-2019) and three-time World balance beam champion (2014-2015 2019, 2019), two-time World vault champion (2018-2019) and a seven-time United States national all-around champion (2013-2016 and 2018-2019 until 2021) and a member of the gold medal-winning American teams at the 2014, 2015, 2018 and the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She also is a three-time World silver medalist (2013 and 2014 on vault, 2018 on uneven bars) and three-time World bronze medalist (2015 on vault 2013, 2013 and 2018 on the balance beam). Biles is the World's most accomplished gymnast (25) and also the world's most gold-medalled (19). Biles has now passed Vitaly Scherbo, who holds the record for the most World medals.
